The New York Knicks' NBA championship title has been years in the making (and for lifelong Knicks fans, decades). But long before New York City erupted in celebration, Jalen Brunson, Josh Hart and Mikal Bridges created a foundation two hours away from the city on Villanova's campus.
Brunson, Hart and Bridges forged a winning identity at Villanova. The trio won an NCAA championship together at Villanova in 2016, with Brunson and Bridges winning an additional title in 2018 after Hart graduated.
Nova Knicks
In 2016, Brunson and Hart played pivotal roles as Villanova captured the NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Championship. Hart paced the Wildcats with 15.5 points per game during that season, while also leading all Big East guards in rebounding. His all-around production made him one of the most decorated players in program history.
Brunson, then a freshman, was already laying the groundwork for greatness. By 2018, he would ascend to the pinnacle of college basketball, leading Villanova to another national title and cementing himself as one of the most accomplished players in NCAA history. In 2018, Brunson swept nearly every major Player of the Year award, including the Naismith Trophy, Wooden Award and Associated Press honors.
Mikal Bridges, meanwhile, developed into one of the most complete two-way players in the country. After redshirting his freshman year, Bridges blossomed into a star, winning the Julius Erving Award as the nation's top small forward in 2018. He averaged 17.7 points per game during Villanova's 2018 championship season, combining elite scoring efficiency with lockdown defense.
Together, they defined a winning culture in Philadelphia, one that would eventually carry over to the NBA.
The Knicks' historic Villanova trio
The Knicks became just the second team ever to start three players from the same college in an NBA Finals game. With their NBA title, Bridges, Brunson and Hart became the fifth set of teammates to win NCAA and NBA championships together. They join the list of the following NCAA to NBA champions:
- Derek Anderson and Antoine Walker — Kentucky ? Miami Heat
- Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Lucius Allen — UCLA ? Milwaukee Bucks
- John Havlicek and Larry Siegfried — Ohio State ? Boston Celtics
- Bill Russell and K.C. Jones — San Francisco ? Boston Celtics
What makes this Knicks championship so compelling is how clearly it mirrors the Villanova blueprint:
Jalen Brunson, the floor general, orchestrated the offense with poise and precision, just as he did during his Player of the Year campaign. His leadership and scoring ability defined the Knicks' playoff run.
Josh Hart brought relentless energy, rebounding and defensive intensity. His versatility, evident even in college when he became the only Wildcat to surpass 1,900 points, 800 rebounds, 250 assists and 150 steals, proved to be invaluable during the Knicks' finals run.
Mikal Bridges' ability to impact every possession echoed his Villanova days, where he was both a defensive anchor and offensive weapon.
Legacy, leveled up
The Knicks' championship isn't just a victory for New York. It's a testament to the enduring power of college connections.
At Villanova, Brunson, Hart and Bridges grew together and learned how to become champions. Their journey from cutting down the NCAA championship nets to raising the NBA Finals trophy represents a remarkable full circle. And for Knicks fans, it's a story that will be remembered forever: A Villanova brotherhood that proved greatness can transcend every level of the game.
