The presidents empowered a subcommittee to develop some alternative plans the membership can discuss at the Division I Governance Dialogue, to be held Jan. 16-17 in conjunction with the NCAA Convention in San Diego.
Constituents from all over athletics presented concepts for the membership and governance structure redesign to a group of Division I presidential leaders.
At its Oct. 24 meeting in Indianapolis, the Division I Leadership Council identified some of the major concepts members believe the Board should consider as the division revises its membership and governance structures.
In January 2013, the Board of Directors launched a comprehensive review of the Division I governance structure and processes, aimed at creating a system that better serves student-athletes. Members from all subdivisions are now working to streamline the process and structure by making it more transparent, responsive and inclusive.
Members will have the opportunity for an open and collaborative conversation about the future at the Division I Governance Dialogue in January 2014, scheduled in conjunction with the 2014 NCAA Convention in San Diego. At that meeting, members will work to build consensus around possible paths forward. Membership participation is vital. Final solutions could be implemented in 2015.
The key dates mark milestones in the Division I governance review:
November 15: Membership survey on governance system closes.
November-December: Board formulates agenda for January Convention session.
December 6: Convention pre-registration closes.*
January 16-17, 2014: Division I Governance Dialogue.
*Those who attend the governance dialogue are not required to attend the Convention. However, if dialogue attendees do not register for the Convention, other programming will be closed to them.
